ST. MAARTEN:--- The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the island as Tropical Storm Jerry continues its westward track across the Atlantic. Residents are advised to stay alert and begin necessary preparations for potential impacts later this week.
As of 5:00 PM on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the center of Tropical Storm Jerry was located approximately 1190 miles east-southeast of St. Maarten. The system is currently moving west at about 23 mph with maximum sustained winds near 50 mph and higher gusts.
Forecasters anticipate that Jerry will strengthen into a hurricane within the next day. A decrease in its forward speed and a turn toward the west-northwest is expected over the next couple of days. Based on the current forecast track, the center of the storm is projected to pass near or just north of St. Maarten late Thursday into Friday. Its closest point to the island is expected to be about 140 miles to the north-northeast on Friday.
Potential Hazards for St. Maarten:
- Wind: Tropical storm-force winds are likely to begin affecting the island starting late Thursday. Tropical-storm-force winds currently extend up to 140 miles from Jerry's center.
- Rainfall: The system is predicted to bring significant rainfall, with accumulations of 2 to 4 inches possible. This heavy rain could be accompanied by thunderstorms, leading to potential flash flooding and rock falls in vulnerable areas. The Met Office will issue flood advisories or warnings if necessary.
- Seas: Marine conditions are expected to deteriorate as the storm approaches. Small craft advisories will be issued as sea conditions become rougher.
Officials are urging the public to monitor updates closely from the Meteorological Department and Disaster Management. Residents, particularly those in coastal regions or areas prone to flooding, should take this opportunity to prepare their homes and properties to protect life and property.
A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the designated area, in this case St. Maarten, within 48 hours.
The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten will continue to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Jerry and provide further updates. The next bulletin is scheduled for 11:00 PM tonight.
