PHILIPSBURG:--- The Victory-Over-Injustice-Consciously-Eliminating-Silence (VOICES) Foundation will host its 16th Annual Cultural Ancestral Emancipation Day Celebration on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Emilio Wilson Park under the inspiring theme, "Education is Our Foundation."
This year's celebration will pay special tribute to retired teachers aged 70 and older, recognizing their invaluable contributions to education and their lasting impact on generations of students throughout the community.
As part of the observance, VOICES Foundation will honor the ancestors through a traditional libation ceremony led by President and Founder Ms. Nkosazana Illis. The event aims to celebrate the journey from emancipation to empowerment while acknowledging those who have helped shape the cultural and educational foundation of St. Maarten.
"We salute, pay special tribute, and say thank you to our retired teachers whose wisdom, dedication, and compassionate hearts have helped shape generations," said Illis. "Their commitment to education has strengthened our community and laid the groundwork for future success."
The family-friendly event will feature local food and drinks, arts and crafts, children's activities, and vendor booths offering a variety of products and treats. Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and enjoy a day of culture, entertainment, and community fellowship.
Admission is free, and the park will open to the public at 12:00 p.m.
The official Honoring Ceremony will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., highlighting the achievements and contributions of the retired educators being recognized.
Entertainment throughout the day will include performances by DJ Pebbels and the Cultural Glamour Dancers, adding music and cultural expression to the festivities.
"So tell Sue to tell Paul and tell them all," Illis said with enthusiasm. "We will be celebrating VOICES Cultural Ancestral Emancipation Day at Emilio Wilson Park on Wednesday, July 1, with the honoring of our retired teachers."
The general public is warmly invited to attend and participate in this meaningful celebration of heritage, education, and community pride.
