Construction Worker Succumbs to Injuries Following Workplace Accident in Indigo Bay.

PHILIPSBURG:---  A tragic workplace accident in Indigo Bay, St Maarten, claimed the life of Derrick Barnes, a Jamaican national, after he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

The incident occurred on Monday, June 23, 2025, just after 3:00 PM, while Mr. Barnes was performing construction work in the area. Preliminary reports indicate that he fell from a ladder and struck his head on a concrete edge below. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) quickly responded to the scene, transporting the injured worker to the St Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for urgent medical care. 

Despite medical intervention, Mr. Barnes passed away the following day as a result of the injuries sustained in the fall. The Sint Maarten Police Force (KPSM) confirmed his passing after receiving the information on June 24, 2025.

Authorities have since informed the Labor Inspectorate, which is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. This will involve determining whether proper safety protocols were in place and whether any factors contributed to the tragedy.

Construction sites often present risks despite safety measures, and this unfortunate incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of following stringent workplace safety regulations. Officials have extended their condolences to Mr. Barnes' family and colleagues.
